Summary

The Qanittaq Clean Arctic Shipping Initiative is a unique partnership, co-led and co-developed by Memorial University and the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) Canada. It aims to address and respond to the increase in Arctic shipping, related environmental impacts affecting Arctic communities and support Inuit communities’ needs for safe and cost-efficient resupply.

By working together on this critical project, we will position Canadians and Inuit as world leaders in Arctic shipping.

Vision

Our vision is to generate the knowledge to support safe and sustainable Arctic shipping, which cannot be successfully completed without Inuit, industry and government partners. Co-development with Inuit organizations and input from Inuit knowledge holders in the Arctic will place Inuit priorities at the centre of the work we do. We will strive to develop knowledge and technology required for more sustainable, more efficient, and safer Arctic shipping, and the evidence to support the necessary policy changes. The initiative will create transformational change and enhance Canada’s position as a world-leader in Arctic shipping.

Goals

  1. Build a knowledge base to address Inuit shipping priorities, promote the safety of ships operating in the Arctic, and protect those environments;

  2. Create the tools and solutions needed to improve the affordability, sustainability and efficiency of the Arctic fleet;

  3. Deliver the evidence necessary to effect national and international policy change for ships operating in the Arctic; and

  4. Enhance the quality of life for Inuit and reduce regional food insecurity.

Research Themes

  1. Sustainable shipping operations and coastal/community infrastructure;

  2. Responsible ship design; and

  3. Governance of Arctic shipping.
